With its stunning beaches and close proximity to K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) it’s no wonder Hervey Bay is a popular Queensland destination. Known as the ‘whale watching capital of the world’, this ocean side town is named after the waters it was built around. The bay is home to some of the largest artificial reefs in Australia and is known for being an excellent fishing spot due to the high levels of marine biodiversity. On the east side of town, jutting out towards Pelican Bank, is the lengthy Urangan Pier which is a popular place for people to drop a line in.

Located along the Sunshine Coast approximately 3.5 hours’ drive north of the state capital, Hervey Bay is the largest coastal town between Noosa and Bundaberg. Over the years the local population has grown fairly steadily, causing it to become one of the bigger towns in regional Queensland. Without a doubt the beachside location and laid-back lifestyle are two of the main draw cards for visitors and new residents, but it’s also not far from the bush.

Just north of town is the Vernon State Forest which features many hiking and mountain biking trails, while to the west is the Wongi State Forest, a peaceful spot that is perfect for a picnic or weekend camping trip. East is K’gari and the Coral Sea, and south is the Mary River.

There are a range of sporting facilities, an airport, emergency services, an aquatic centre, aged care facilities and a state of the art digital hospital that enables high quality care to be delivered in a regional area. For families with children there are a number of public and private schools, including a special education school and performing arts college. For those looking to go on to further education there is also a TAFE and university campus. Not only do these facilities provide valuable services to the local community, but they also create jobs and lead to opportunities that support the economic growth of Hervey Bay. This in turn helps to attract new residents and feeds the property market.

Hervey Bay also has a thriving retail sector with a number of chain stores as well as locally owned businesses and eateries. The choice of supermarket is comparable to any big city suburb and there are a variety specialty stores including office supplies, auto parts, textile traders and homewares. There would be few things residents need to leave town to buy, adding a level of convenience that is not always assured in a coastal town largely known for its tourist attractions.

The laid-back feel, seaside location, warm climate and available services combine to make Hervey Bay an attractive prospect for investors. A number of properties are within walking distance of the beach making them a popular choice for renters and holiday makers, and those that aren’t are only a short drive away. The area is generally seen as being affordable, especially when compared to some of the other locations along the Sunshine Coast. It also has the added bonus of having a relatively stable property market that historically has grown quite steadily.
